Pole Position on the Starting Grid

Pole position

The two boats ahead of us on the starting grid got launched today.

Polaris left immediately for Holland and major hull repairs at her manufacturer’s yard. She had been smashed against a steel work boat that had swung into her on a mooring.

The 45’ tourist boat bound for Ilulisat went to the fuel dock and soon the harbour became covered in a diesel slick so not sure what went wrong.

Nothing now lies between us and the sea except, of course, the weekend and a demand to pay the boatyard bill before launch even though we haven’t yet been told what the bill is. We hope that by Monday or Tuesday Shimshal will be back in the water and cuddling up to passing icebergs once more.

Meanwhile we have a fine forecast for the weekend and, with most jobs now done, the skipper has declared shore leave even though we have yet to put to sea. In reality this probably means we will take the tender over to Fox Island and walk where we had snowshoed 3 months earlier. Maybe even glimpse an Arctic Fox?
