Hyssington Open Gardens

We love our garden but fear that it won’t be to the taste of many folk. It nestles beautifully beneath the Norman Motte and it’s ancient oaks. The picture perfect church yard is a few yards away and we gaze out over Corndon, Roundton and the stone age axe factory on Cubbulch. It lacks manicured flower beds and perfect lawns but it is how we like it. Wildlife friendly, low maintenance and a place for peaceful relaxation where we don’t have to worry about pulling every weed and trimming every border.

Most of the trees were planted by my father 35 years ago including a perfect oak which came from an acorn he potted up in 1985. The wildflower meadow was once fertilised pasture and it has taken decades to reduce the fertility and restore the balance of wild flowers. The restoration of the pool has been our latest project and already it is now settling into the landscape looking out over the Camlad Valley where we can watch the rain clouds march in towards us from Llandinam.

The hedge is our pride and joy. Planted with 400 whips and 13 species in 2007 we pleached it in 2017 and love the result.

In early June the bluebells will be over and the cowslips gone but the meadow should be rich with wild flowers, butterflies and bugs. We hope you enjoy our unusual garden offering as much as we do.
