Waiting for the weather
With rain and wind on the way we chose St John’s as the perfect place to let the weather go by. A weary looking iceberg, wilted by the summer’s sun, was just off shore when we turned to enter the narrow breach in the cliffs that is the entrance to St John’s Harbour.
Sally had rung ahead and we were cleared to enter by the Harbour Authorities and to proceed to Dock 6 opposite the container quay and in downtown St John’s. We tucked ourselves snugly alongside a tyre defended wharf in front of a German yacht (unoccupied) and behind a couple of commercial boats.
Apart from the bustle of traffic and the smells of a city centre harbour it is the perfect place to sit out the rain, fog and headwinds until we get an opportunity to sneak our way south.
In the meantime we have the amenity of city life with Starbucks just around the block. We took the bus to the other side of town to pick up a spare part and, whilst waiting for the bus, we stumbled across Tess, an Ocean Cruising Club friend. She had seen our Club’s burgee from her office window.
Tess is putting her car at our disposal later today and we have a supper date too tonight with her and Al. Ted, the OCC Port Officer is dropping by too so St John’s is shaping up to be a sociable stopping off point as well as a sheltered hideaway from the summer blow that is on it’s way.
