We had been watching the forecast intently since arrival in Burgeo as we needed a weather window to cross the Cabot Strait to Nova Scotia. With some ugly weather brewing towards the end of the week we were beginning to feel the pressure imposed by work and airline schedules. After many weather downloads we decided to leave at noon on Tuesday. Alchemy left at 10:00 for François.
We were sad to leave Burgeo. The Provincial Park is a gem and June Hiscock, the volunteer Harbour Master, gave us a chunk of moose as a farewell gift. She only shoots the little ones because they are more tender and she can’t carry the big ones!
We motored down the channel holding our breath as the depth gauge counted down to 70 cm below the keel. East of Boar Island a Bald Eagle devoured it’s prey on a granite headland. Scores of dolphins joined us and stayed with the boat for ages. Leaping, pirouetting and generally having fun. A solitary Fin Whale spouted in our wake. A fitting farewell to Newfoundland.
The wind built from ahead and the boat slowly clawed and crashed its way south and west. It was as if it too wanted to stay in these wonderful, northern waters.
