Oyster Roast

This evening we got invited to our first oyster roast which was welcome respite after a stressful day of boat DIY. I’ve been pondering the installation of our Hydrovane for ages and manufacturer had marked up a photo of our transom illustrating where the brackets should be mounted. Unfortunately I took his advice too literally and put them exactly where the manufacturer had suggested. Big mistake and tomorrow will be spent unpicking yesterday’s work.

The Oyster roast was brilliant. Vicky drove us about 15 miles to a friend’s waterfront property near Deltaville. Bob and Debby were hosting a whole tribe of their friends and family and had 4 bushels of oysters roasting over an open fire and, of course, there were numerous trimmings to accompany the oyster feast.

The oysters are cultivated and the seed is supplied by the State of Virginia and is a steroid, triploid variety. The seed files to a pice of sand or shell and when fixed it’s called spat. Lots of dock owners have oyster floats suspended between the piles to raise their own crop.
