In the steamy heat of the South Pacific we have, once again, been glued to a bicycle race tracker. This time it was the Race Across Germany and the two star entrants we hoped to track were Franz and Sally’s niece, Berta. An 1100 km, 40 hour, unsupported dash from Flensburg, on the Danish border, to Garmisch Partenkirchan on the Austrian border. A short outing by Franz’s standard as a few years ago he came second in the much longer, harder and hillier 2300km race around Austria.
Sure enough Franz and his racing partner, Alex, raised the winner’s trophy in exactly the time Franz had predicted. Congratulations to them both. But sadly Berta’s entry was thwarted by a bike crash a couple of weeks ago when a moped pulled out in front of her leaving her in hospital with multiple broken ribs and a haemothorax. Luckily she escaped her hospital bed just in time to make it to the Garmisch finish line to welcome her extraordinary boyfriend
Another amazing feat of planning, training and endurance executed with military precision. Fantastic and well done!
