A Gala Supper

Tonight is Friday night and pencilled into our social calendar was a Gala Supper in the sports hall at the dock. The event was designed to raise money for the church restoration so the feast and dancing children were preceded by a lengthy church service. Lots of catholic symbolism, an enthusiastic choir conductor and a shouty priest hurling fire and brimstone from the palm leaf strewn pulpit. At least I think he was hurling fire and brimstone because the public address system mangled every word and those words were a heady mix of a Tuamotu version of Polynesian and French.

My impression was that there was a huge number of kids on this catholic island but then I realised that Makemo is the regional centre for the surrounding Motus - the nearest of which is inhabited by Mormons.

Met some lovely cruising crew ( Shianti Volantis, Queen Jane, Obelix and Impossible) and a coffee morning is planned for tomorrow chez Shimshal.
