Fog, ice but no storms - yet!

Fog, ice but no storms - yet!

We are anchored in Sydney Cove on Pork Island about half a mile south of Beef Island. The boat is beset by drizzle and thick, grey Newfoundland fog but the forested hills provide perfect protection. A tranquil spot where the black spruce reach up into the murk and a few summer cabins litter the shore.

Like everywhere else in this part of Newfoundland this had once been a thriving fishing community but the fish are long gone and so too the fisherman who laboured hard to make a living.

Out in the grey, foggy murk we came across the odd iceberg. A patch of brilliant white against the grey sea and the grey sky. They are there to trip us up and to keep us on our toes. They are an occasional reminder that we are still in cold, northern waters. Waters where the fog is made as well as the weather systems that enliven the North Atlantic. Plenty of things then to fret about as we gently wend our way south in search of more temperate sailing.
